The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum – Art

 

Intent

 

Our intent begins with raising the profile and values of the arts within our school. We want children to value the arts as a means to harnessing lifelong skills.  At Badsley we want to develop the arts as a means to engage our children: to develop a sense of belonging, engagement and success. We see the arts as a way to reach out to children and give them skills that can be transferred across the curriculum.

Art will be used to develop cultural understanding both of self and the wider community/world. We want to enhance children’s experiences so they are enriched and empowered.

Through art, we want to create a stronger sense of our children’s place in the community and ability work together. We feel that there is an opportunity to develop vocabulary, expression, confidence and self-esteem.

 

Implementation

 

As a school and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

•produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

•become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other creative expressions

•evaluate and analyse artistic works using the language of art, craft and design

•know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

 

Class teachers are usually responsible for teaching art and design technology, although there will be times when professional artists/helpers will be involved in the teaching of the topic. We take every opportunity to develop links with outside agencies and experts in order to enrich our Art and Design provision. Through our journey through Arts Mark, we will have a breadth of external expertise and training which will enrich our art and design curriculum.

 

Impact

 

The children will have a wide range of quality experiences through Art and Design that enables them to draw on and develop their learning. All aspects of the curriculum are enhanced through having these first hand experiences in Art and Design – be it Maths or Geography! The community is drawn together through joint art/design projects and experiences - experiences that are authentic, quality and above all -  enjoyable!
