The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum – DT




At Badsley Primary, pupils are encouraged to explore all aspects of Design and Technology by being exposed to a variety of different materials, tools and equipment across all key stages.  We are committed to providing a safe environment where children can be creative, reflective, know that it is acceptable and normal to make mistakes and learn from and alongside their peers.  All of our Design and Technology lessons are hands-on, developing practical skills for life that are transferrable to other areas. We ensure that children understand all safety aspects involved in a task and allow them to demonstrate their new skills independently.  During designing, making and evaluating, the children learn from their own mistakes, problem solve and learn about resilience.  We encourage team work of different abilities and allow children to discover their own potential, strengths and those of others.  




Across both key stages, we ensure that pupils have the chance to prepare food, cut wood, evaluate existing products, sew, bake, use mechanisms and build structures of all sizes.  These activities are well-planned with enough time allocated and the correct resources provided.  The tasks are linked to our termly topics and enthuse the children to gain a better understanding of the world around them.  Our projects are tailored around real-life contexts and we offer differentiated learning to engage all types of learners.  Design and Technology lessons are coherently planned and sequenced to allow progression across transferrable skills required as a child develops.  Parents are often invited in to work with and support their child.  Tasks are usually completed in a small group to encourage learning from each other and problem solving.




At the end of each block of learning, children have built up their knowledge and confidence in the area of Design and Technology they have been focussing on.  They have been able to do things that they do not have the opportunity to do at home.  As they progress through the years, they will have found something they enjoy doing and learnt transferrable life skills eg food preparation or sewing, that they can continue as a hobby or in a job or apprenticeship later.  Children will have been introduced to practical possibilities they may have not considered, allowing every child to feel success and find something they excel at.  They will been able to explore products that they might not have realised existed.  Their skills of self expression will have been nurtured and their understanding that making mistakes is a valuable part of the evaluation process that can be applied to everyday life.
